Employment Of Labour Militants By Liverpool City Council
EDM number 403 in 1989-90, proposed by David Alton on 30/01/1990.
That this House deplores the decision of Liverpool Labour councillors, taken on the casting vote its leader, Councillor Keva Coombes, to employ Mr Tony Mulhearn and Mr Frank Mills, at ratepayers' expense as Euro-liaison officers, at ú14,500 per annum; recalls their notorious role in the crisis of 1985, which led to financial chaos in Liverpool and to 47 councillors being surcharged and disqualified; recalls that the Leader of the Opposition successfully led subsequent moves to expel Mr Mulhearn from the Labour Party; and congratulates those 23 Labour councillors who voted against this latest attempt to consolidate Militant influence on Merseyside, who know that these sinecure grace and favour jobs will be used as a platform for political purposes, and that these jobs for the boys are unlikely to help Liverpool's economy or reputation.
