Osteoporosis And Free Hormone Replacement Therapy
EDM number 378 in 1989-90, proposed by Tony Lloyd on 24/01/1990.
That this House notes the report of the Office of Health Economics indicating that one in four women over the age of 60 and one in two over the age of 70 is at risk from osteoporosis which leads to increased susceptibility to fracture as well as crumbling of the vertebrae; contrasts the costs of osteoporotic fracture at about ú500 million a year with the millions of pounds that would be saved if hormone therapy treatment were available free of charge; and calls upon the Department of Health to save taxpayers' money and to enhance the quality of life for millions of women by introducing a screening programme which would identify and offer free hormone replacement therapy treatment to those at risk.
