Breathalyser Statistics

EDM number 333 in 1989-90, proposed by Joseph Ashton on 18/01/1990.

That this House congratulates Mr Keith Waterhouse on his excellent Daily Mail column of Thursday 18th January for pointing out that over the Christmas period Merseyside Police breathalysed 223 drivers and found 127 positive, while at the same time Nottinghamshire Police stopped 3,483 drivers and found 134 positive, thereby proving that either the Nottinghamshire success rate was a measly 3 per cent. or that there is obvious proof that half the motoring population of Merseyside was rolling drunk; and notes that on Mr Waterhouse's analysis that random breath tests are a stupendous waste of Police time with little to show for it and that the Secretary of State for Transport was absolutely right to give the thumbs down to random breath testing.
