Avon Poll Tax
EDM number 330 in 1989-90, proposed by Dawn Primarolo on 17/01/1990.
That this House condemns the action of the Conservative honourable Members for Avon who, whilst remaining silent in their constituencies at the prospect of a local poll tax of ú500, held a secret meeting with the Secretary of State for the Environment demanding that the poll tax cap Avon County Council, a hung authority run by a coalition of Tories and Alliance, forcing them to cut spending immediately by ú72 million, smashing local services, whilst at the same time refusing to meet with Avon county councillors to discuss the disastrous effects of the poll tax; calls on those Conservative honourable Members to publicly declare their opposition to the poll tax; and demands that in the best interests of the ratepayers of Avon the government abandon its plans for its introduction.
This motion has been signed by a total of 39 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
