The Constitutional Convention And The Union
EDM number 329 in 1989-90, proposed by Alex Salmond on 17/01/1990.
That this House notes the remarkable admission on the BBC television programme "Left, Right and Centre" on Friday 12th January by Cannon Kenyon Wright, Chairman of the Scottish Convention Business Committee, that he was 'as much a unionist as Michael Forsyth'; notes that Labour's Scottish Executive seem to have jettisoned their convention declaration of last year that the Scottish people are sovereign in favour of support for the sovereignty of this Parliament; questions whether a movement for constitutional change can seriously be led by someone who claims to match even the honourable Member for Stirling's commitment as a unionist, or by the leadership of a political party so hopelessly thurled to the Westminster system; and now looks forward to agreement between convention parties on a devolution scheme so that this can be properly judged by the Scottish people against the Scottish Nationalist Party policy of independence within the European Community.
