Government Policy On Welfare Milk
EDM number 311 in 1989-90, proposed by Robert Parry on 16/01/1990.
That this House is deeply concerned at the Government's policy of changing the funding of the welfare milk scheme from 28th January; notes that the scheme, which has been in place for 40 years, has set out to provide free milk for pregnant women, single parents in receipt of family credit with children under five years and for the long-term unemployed; believes that these groups are bound to be seriously affected by the change, as will some smaller suppliers in areas of depression and unemployment, such as Merseyside, the North, South Wales and Scotland etc; believes that it is clear that, once again, Government policy will seriously create suffering in areas of high unemployment and low pay; and therefore calls upon the Government to reconsider its policy and ensure that no suffering to those in real need will ensue.
