Coventry Ben Unit
EDM number 299 in 1989-90, proposed by Alan Meale on 15/01/1990.
That this House commends the invaluable service of the staff and volunteers at the Ben Unit of the Coventry Technical College on behalf of the 28,000 Coventry citizens who experience considerable employment problems due to illiteracy who but for the interest of Jaguar and Massey Ferguson are shunned by the rest of Coventry's major companies; condemns the Government's couldn't care less attitude to the six million British citizens affected by problems with writing, reading and basic mathematics; and calls on the Government and private industries to follow the example of 500 American companies who annually paid $300 million into remedial training, and to invest in the expertise of the woefully underfunded staff and volunteers who carry the brunt of the problem in the local authority sector which requires a major overhaul and further large scale Government funding.
