Liberal Democrats Action On Recycling

EDM number 26 in 1989-90, proposed by Matthew Taylor on 21/11/1989.

That this House notes recent statements of the Secretary of State for the Environment about the need for less waste and more recycling; and trusts that he will follow the example of Liberal Democrat controlled councils such as the London Borough of Richmond, Adur District Council, North East Fife District Council, South Somerset District Council, the London Borough of Sutton, and Gordon District Council who have: expanded recycling facilities in their areas bringing facilities within walking distance of residents, established local recycling centres so that residents can recycle paper, glass, textiles and cans all at one site, pioneered the recycling of high quality waste paper in Council offices, set up schemes to reclaim the chlorofluorocarbons from domestic fridges and freezers, involved the community in recycling campaigns by returning the profits of recycling to the community through donations to charities, and pump-priming grants for environmental projects and set up Adopta-bank schemes to give community groups like the Scouts a direct stake in the success of recycling schemes and notes that the groups help to keep the site clean and tidy and promote it locally in exchange for a share of the sites' income and have campaigned for rebates from waste disposal authorities to encourage recycling activity.
