European Social Fund And Local Government

That this House, mindful that the European Social Fund is used to provide courses which enable young people and the long term unemployed to learn useful skills, deplores the arbitrary way that the European Commission have recently imposed a new set of priorities for Objectives 3 and 4 of the European Social Fund; regrets that work undertaken by the local authorities to prepare programmes as originally instructed by the European Commission has been wasted; expresses concern that these changes threaten the viability of courses which are vital to the future well-being of the regions; and calls on the United Kingdom Government to press the European Commission to allow local authorities to resubmit their programmes so that they accord with the new priorities, and to ensure that the changes do not result in a loss of funding.
