Hartlepool Labour Party Nomination (No.3)

EDM number 226 in 1989-90, proposed by Alan Haselhurst on 18/12/1989.

That this House regrets the lack of Northern talent that has left Hartlepool Labour Party to import a carpetbagger, Mr Peter Mandelson, with no previous connection with either Hartlepool or with the North East until the vacancy occurred; requests Labour's National Executive Committee, before confirming this candidate, to investigate fully the four page letter of complaint from the Transport and General Workers Union branch 8/325 to its regional organiser alleging harassment, intimidation and procedural irregularities; notes that one of these complaints was that Mr Mandelson has been telling members that Neil Kinnock has promised him that he will be a Minister from day one of the next Labour government; sympathises with any current Labour front-bencher who will have to make way for Mr Mandelson in this unlikely event; records its disgust at the way in which the people of Hartlepool have been treated in this shabby display of trade union patronage and bullying from London; and calls on the Northern Labour Group either to condemn the imposition of this carpetbagger upon them or else to table to this Motion an amendment of slavish obedience to the Leader of the Opposition and his public relations man.

This motion has been signed by a total of 8 MPs.
