Relations Between India And Nepal
EDM number 220 in 1989-90, proposed by Elizabeth Peacock on 18/12/1989.
That this House congratulates Mr Vishwanath Pratap Singh on his election as Prime Minister of India; wishes him well in dealing with the problems of his enormous country; expresses its concern at the continuing trade and transit disputes between India and Nepal, begun in March 1989, which are causing such hardship to the Nepalese people in depriving them of kerosene for cooking and forcing them to cut down trees needed for soil conservation as a substitute; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to use their influence with both these sovereign states, namely, the new Government of India and the Kingdom of Nepal, to achieve an acceptable and honourable solution in accordance with international practices without further delay.
