Probation Service Strategy
EDM number 205 in 1989-90, proposed by John Battle on 13/12/1989.
That this House recognises that the Probation Service in England and Wales has been working in the courts and the community for more than 80 years, using a wide range of skills to contain and reduce offending, seeking to maintain the balance between public safety and providing effective and caring support for offenders; and calls upon the Government to adopt the strategy put forward by the Probation Service to build upon existing non-custodial sanctions and projects and the creation of a sentencing council which would allow for greater consistency and achieve the aim of reducing the use of custody for non-violent offenders without resorting to more punitive supervision of offenders.
This motion has been signed by a total of 55 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
