Hartlepool Labour Party Nomination (No.2)

EDM number 182 in 1989-90, proposed by David Shaw on 11/12/1989.

That this House notes the failure of the Labour Party to investigate fully, or at all, the complaints made to its North-East regional organiser about the selection of the prospective Labour Party candidate for Hartlepool; regrets that Mr Stephen Jones has now been pressurised by Transport and General Workers Union bosses to withdraw his candidature; believes that the deselection of the honourable Member for Birkenhead by the union block vote against the wishes of a clear majority of party members is profoundly undemocratic even by East European standards; recalls that the Conservative candidate, Mr Graham Robb, as selected on the basis of one man, one vote, believes that the people of Hartlepool deserve no less in the selection of all their prospective candidates; and therefore calls upon Hartlepool Labour Party to conduct the final selection on Sunday 17th December on the basis of one man, one vote without any further interference from trade union bosses such as Mr Joe Mills, Mr Ron Todd, Mr Tom Burlison and their henchmen.
