Monktonhall Miners' Co-operative

EDM number 1449 in 1989-90, proposed by Malcolm Bruce on 24/10/1990.

That this House notes with concern British Coal's refusal to consider awarding a licence to Monktonhall Miners' Co-operative to take over the running of their old pit in spite of the fact that substantially more than the maximum of 187 miners who could be employed in a private pit under the present law have expressed a willingness not only to work at the pit but to put up share capital of ú2,000 each; notes the refusal of the Secretary of State for Energy or the Prime Minister to intervene on behalf of these enterprising miners; believes this confirms the Government's determination to maintain British Coal as a monopoly like other pre-privatisation state-owned corporations; and further notes that amendments to the Coal Industry Bill moved by the honourable Member for Gordon and opposed by the Government and the Labour Party would have given the Monktonhall miners the right of appeal to the Secretary of State.
