Elections In Guyana

EDM number 1289 in 1989-90, proposed by Harry Cohen on 17/07/1990.

That this House notes that elections are due within the next year in Guyana; that there have been allegations that previous elections have been neither free nor fair; that local opposition parties, religious bodies, human rights agencies as well as international organisations have expressed concern that the elections are unlikely to be conducted fairly; urges Her Majesty's Government to press the Guyana Government: (a) to open up the whole electoral process to international scrutiny by allowing a team of international observers into Guyana before and during the election period so that the elections could be seen to be free and fair, (b) for an assurance that there would not be any military interference or involvement in the electoral process and (c) to allow unrestricted and equal access by all political parties to the national media.
