Comprehensive School Closure Policy In Wandsworth
EDM number 1283 in 1989-90, proposed by Tom Cox on 16/07/1990.
That this House deplores the action of Wandsworth Borough Council in closing Chestnut Grove, Walsingham, John Archer and Battersea Park comprehensive schools as an example of the new brutalism of Conservative policy in Wandsworth, which will deprive large sections of South London of parental choice in co-educational and comprehensive education, since these four schools are to be replaced by two city technology colleges and one denominational magnet school with a music specialism; and further notes with particular concern the funding of one of the proposed city technology colleges by ADT Ltd., which recently took over Britannia Securities, in which a principal investor was Edward Lister, who chairs Wandsworth Education Committee.
