Fisheries Conservancy Board (N.i.) And Protection Of Salmon Stock
EDM number 1262 in 1989-90, proposed by Roy Beggs on 10/07/1990.
That this House calls for an independent inquiry into: (a) the operation of an illegal salmon hatchery in Maghera since 1988, (b) the use of Fisheries Conservancy Board equipment to obtain salmon for stripping on the Grillagh River and elsewhere in County Londonderry, (c) the use of a net at the mouth of the river Maine by Fisheries Conservancy Board bailiffs, (d) why official reports indicated that there were approximately four dead salmon involved when the hatchery was raided, (e) eyewitness reports that 40 to 60 salmon carcasses could be accounted for, (f) the question of alleged links between a Fisheries Conservancy Board bailiff and a County Donegal fish farm, (g) the lack of confidence which exists between bailiffs presently and formerly employed by the Fisheries Conservancy Board, in fellow bailiffs in the Fisheries Conservancy Board and R.U.C. and strong suspicions held that some Fisheries Conservancy Board bailiffs may be poachers, (h) harassment of efficient bailiffs by a Fisheries Conservancy Board former chief officer, (i) why Sir Patrick McNaughton was brought to supervise the return of salmon eggs to the Grillagh river by Fisheries Conservancy Board officials, (j) which bailiffs were intercepted by the R.U.C. poaching salmon on the Claddy river and its tributaries and why no action has been taken, (k) why no prosecutions followed the interception of 18 out of 19 fishing boats on Lough Neagh which were operating illegally by a joint Fisheries Conservancy Board and R.U.C. patrol and (l) what was the estimated value of an expensive trawl net seized by that patrol and what were the circumstances of its return by the Fisheries Conservancy Board to operators from whom it had been seized.
