Deaths In The Channel Tunnel
EDM number 1207 in 1989-90, proposed by Roland Boyes on 28/06/1990.
That this House, alarmed at the number of deaths in the Channel Tunnel, particularly at the British end, is of the opinion that this is due to the inadequate number of health and safety officers; is appalled at some irresponsible press reporting, for example The Sun's headline 'Tunnel Gangs risk Death in Booze Race', which is damaging to the workforce and also hurtful to the bereaved, and also strongly condemns the media attempts to denigrate the workforce by, for example, falsification of a photograph; and calls on the Secretary of State for Transport to produce urgently a report on the situation and for the Secretary of State for Employment to ensure that there should be no further speed-up of Tunnel development work.
