Leith-Edinburgh Amalgamation

EDM number 1206 in 1989-90, proposed by Ron Brown on 28/06/1990.

That this House notes that 70 years ago the town of Leith, known the world over for its advanced ideas in municipal services, was amalgamated with conservative Edinburgh by Parliamentary decree, contrary to the vote of Leithers in a local referendum arranged by Captain Benn, the local Member of Parliament; recognises that political changes have taken place over the years and that the working class of both communities have united to fight the injustices created by capitalism; believes that the Labour-controlled city council should hold a special meeting to commemorate the anniversary; and calls on all Labour representatives to uphold the Leith motto - Persevere - by resisting the poll tax and Tory policies in general.
