Japanese Slaughter Of Dolphins And Porpoises
EDM number 1197 in 1989-90, proposed by Harry Greenway on 27/06/1990.
That this House notes the decision of the International Whaling Commission to ban commercial whaling since 1985; notes the reluctance of Japan to join this ban; notes the discovery of electric harpoons in the bodies of some Minke whales killed by the Japanese for human consumption; notes that dolphin meat, falsely labelled as whalemeat, is being sold for human consumption in Japan; notes that Japan's dolphin catches have risen since 1985; further notes that at least two thirds of the population of Dall's rare breed porpoises, which live off North Japan, have been slaughtered since 1987; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to urge the Japanese Government to stop forthwith this selfish, dishonest and rapacious killing before this breed of porpoise becomes extinct and to stop the similar slaughter of all other dolphins, propoises, and small whales and other endangered mammals.
