Repression Of Cerj In Guatemala

That this House considers that the level of human rights abuse in Guatemala has reached levels meriting international action; is concerned that Guatemala is the only country in Central America where the peace process has gained little momentum; believes that the lives of members and leaders of the CERJ (Council of Ethnic Communities) are now at risk; and urges Her Majesty's Government to make the Guatemalan government and the European Commission aware of its concern and condemnation of the repression of the CERJ and to ask the British Ambassador in Guatemala to invite Amilcar Mendez, leader of the CERJ, to the British Embassy as a public demonstration of concern for his safety.
