Human Rights In The Sudan
EDM number 1153 in 1989-90, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 20/06/1990.
That this House is deeply concerned about many long-standing difficulties faced by the people of Sudan, including armed conflict in the south of the country, profoundly disturbed by reports of the arrest and ill treatment of many Sudanese citizens, including legally elected representatives of all parties, following the coup d'etat of 30th June 1989, shocked by the summary execution of 28 army officers on 18th April and of six more on 24th April, including a number who had been in custody for several months, following allegations of a new attempted coup, noting the condemnation of these executions in the Democratic Front in exile, which is representative of the main political force in the Sudan, call for an immediate end to all execution and other violations of human rights in the Sudan, requests the United Nations Secretary General and the United Nations' Commission of Human Rights to make the strongest possible protest to the Sudanese authorities against the recent executions and to seek by all possible means to persuade these authorities to observe internationally accepted standards of human rights; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to make representations to the Government of the Sudan.
This motion has been signed by a total of 41 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
