Opposition Policy On Sellafield

EDM number 1148 in 1989-90, proposed by Simon Hughes on 20/06/1990.

That this House believes the proposed THORP reprocessing site at Sellafield is undesirable and unnecessary; suggests it can only be justified economically by the continued importation over long periods of considerable quantities of radioactive material with consequent inherent dangers to both land and marine environment; sympathises with those living near Sellafield who will have to put up with the world's nuclear dustbin on their doorstep; calls on Her Majesty's Opposition, which allegedly opposes the importation of toxic waste, to come clean and state publicly whether or not they would proceed with THORP; and suggests the nation is entitled to know whether they put the interests of the nation above those of the honourable Member for Copeland.
