Education In Calderdale

EDM number 1146 in 1989-90, proposed by Alice Mahon on 20/06/1990.

That this House is deeply concerned at the effect poll tax capping will have on education in Calderdale; agrees with the primary head teachers in Calderdale who have commented that 'serious damage will be caused to the education of Calderdale's children if the capping goes ahead, that Calderdale has not been profligate in their educational spending, quite the reverse, as it falls within the bottom banding of local authorities in allocating money to education, and that Calderdale schools will be unable to deliver the National Curriculum'; further agrees with the comments of the Secondary head Teachers' Association that 'we believe that secondary education is already seriously under-funded, schools are ill-placed to face the additional costs of the Education Reform Act and the introduction of the National Curriculum'; that the Conservative group on Calderdale Council keep insisting the ú7. 5 million cap can be made without cuts in education but they consistently refuse to say how; and calls upon the Government to stop this undemocratic and unfair capping immediately.

This motion has been signed by a total of 56 MPs.
