Demanning Of Railway Stations
EDM number 1122 in 1989-90, proposed by Jimmy Wray on 18/06/1990.
That this House believes that the public transport system has a special obligation to give priority to the safety and comfort of passengers especially those in a vulnerable situation, such as women, children, old people and the disabled; is appalled by the demanning of railway stations which has already resulted in a huge increase of reported attacks on passengers and reduces the freedom of vulnerable people to use trains at all or at certain hours of the day and night; further sees these measures as economically short sighted and out of step with the environmental need to attract more customers to train services; urges British Rail, first to review this disasterous policy which increases the number of the unemployed and second to emulate its French, Swedish and Norwegian counterparts which are confidently building railway systems adequate for the year 2000.
