Promotion Of Newcastle United

EDM number 1114 in 1989-90, proposed by David Clelland on 14/06/1990.

That this House deplores the decision of the Football League to promote defeated play-off finalists Sunderland AFC to Division One in the event of the demotion of Swindon Town AFC; recognises that the play-off system clearly intends that the winner of the final only should be promoted; considers that in the event of the play-off system not settling the issue of promotion then the only just method of deciding which club should be promoted is to select the teams with the best overall performance over the season, as indicated by the points system; observes that justice therefore dictates that third-placed Newcastle United should be promoted to Division One, having gained six clear points more than sixth-placed Sunderland; notes the comments of Sunderland fans following the defeat of their team in the play-off finals that the team did not deserve to be in the First Division following their lack-lustre performance at Wembley; and calls upon the Football League to review this decision urgently.
