Possible Parliamentary Visit To Iran

EDM number 1111 in 1989-90, proposed by Russell Johnston on 14/06/1990.

That this House notes the possibility of a visit by honourable Members to Iran, despite the disparaging comments about such a visit published in the Iranian daily newspapers Jomhuri-ye Eslami and Abrar on 27th May and by the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament on 29th May; and is confident that all honourable Members who make such a visit will state unequivocally in Iran that: (a) the death threat to Mr Salman Rushdie must be totally withdrawn, (b) while Britain has every goodwill for Islam and respect for Islamic beliefs the conditions relating to Mr Rushdie imposed by the Iranian Parliament are totally unacceptable and (c) Iran should bring about the release of Mr Cooper and the British hostages in Lebanon immediately and without any pre-conditions.
