That this House expresses its deep concern at the proposal by the British mining multinational, Rio Tinto Zinc, and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Kennecott Copper, to open up a mine in Northern Wisconsin, USA; notes the intense opposition to the scheme by local councils, numerous environmental organisations, and the Lac Courte Oreilles Chippewa Indians, whose hunting, fishing, and gathering rights are guaranteed by treaty against any environmental degradation; and deplores the refusal of RTZ to postpone the state hearings on the mining development for 30 days to allow the Lac Courte Oreilles Chippewa Indians to prepare their case.
