Withdrawal Of Emergency Care From Sheppey General Hospital

That this House notes with concern the proposed withdrawal of emergency care services at Sheppey General Hospital, Isle of Sheppey, which has already in recent years lost a children's ward, maternity facilities and surgical provision; recognises that if the proposal is carried out the hospital will be reduced to minimal non-acute provision for geriatric patients; further notes that Sheppey residents will have to make an 18 mile journey to Medway District Hospital for future treatment; fears that this additional travel time could well mean the difference between life and death; acknowledges that there is intense opposition on the Isle of Sheppey to these draconian proposals, evidenced by the Parliamentary lobby on 5th June of over 100 Sheppey residents who were deeply aggrieved that their own honourable Member, the honourable Member for Faversham, did not have the courtesy to meet them; and calls upon the Government to ensure that Medway Health Authority immediately withdraws these proposals and restores a full range of health services to the Isle of Sheppey.
