Yasser Arafat And The State Of Israel
EDM number 1039 in 1989-90, proposed by Ivan Lawrence on 21/05/1990.
That this House notes the report in the Paris-based Lebanese newspaper Al Muharrar on 19th April, that the PLO leader Yasser Arafat addressing senior Fatah military personnel in Baghdad on 6th April, urged 'open fire on the new Jewish immigrants be they from the Soviet Union, Ethiopia or anywhere else...I want you to shoot on the ground or in the air at every immigrant who thinks our land is a playground'; notes that Yasser Arafat went on to say 'it makes no difference whether they live in Jaffa or Jericho. I give you explicit instructions to open fire, do everything to stop the flow of immigration...'; further notes his words 'I give you my instructions to use violence against the immigrants; I will jail whoever refuses to do this, I have already put into prison Palestinian ambassadors, members of the Revolutionary Councils and clergymen when they make a mistake. My decision and the decision of the Fatah to use violence must be carried out in real terms'; further notes that the PLO leader has not after six weeks, challenged the accuracy of this report; and urges Her Majesty's Government in its understandable anxiety to advance the peace process in the Middle East not to ignore the evidence that the PLO leader is still a man of violence whose intention continues to be the elimination of the State of Israel.
