Detentions Without Trial In South Africa
EDM number 1018 in 1989-90, proposed by Peter L Pike on 17/05/1990.
That this House welcomes the release of Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners in South Africa but remains gravely concerned that on 9th May 324 people remained in detention without trial under the state of emergency and that 43 people continued to be detained under section 29 of the Internal Security Act and that Glen Thomas, a fieldworker for the Grahamstown Rural Committee and the chairman of the National Land Committee, organisations working with communities threatened with forced removal, was detained as recently as 11th May under section 29 of the Internal Security Act; and therefore calls on the Prime Minister to make strong representations to the South African Government for the immediate release of all political prisoners and detainees, including Mr Thomas, as well as the repeal of the Internal Security Act and the lifting of the state of emergency.
This motion has been signed by a total of 76 MPs, 2 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
