National Garden Festival 1990

That this House congratulates all concerned in the successful launch of the 1990 National Garden Festival in Gateshead; recognises in particular the major part played by the Metropolitan Borough Council which won the right to host the festival in competition with 27 other authorities; welcomes this celebration of the re-birth of 200 acres of land and the relief from industrial pollution and toxic wasteland of the local people; appreciates the co-operation, assistance and participation of the surrounding local authorities and previous festival hosts in Liverpool, Stoke and Glasgow; and extends all good wishes to participants and visitors for the success of the festival and for the subsequent development of the area to the benefit of the people of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear and the Northern Region of England.
