Ivory Burning In Taiwan

EDM number 1005 in 1989-90, proposed by Tony Banks on 16/05/1990.

That this House warmly congratulates the Government of Taiwan for their courageous decision to burn publicly on 21st-22nd May all confiscated ivory stocks; notes that whereas Taiwan prohibited all trade in raw and worked ivory as from 29th August 1989, the Hong Kong authorities still issue export permits for ivory destined for that country as Taiwan is not a party to CITES; acknowledges that the public burning at the Nan Jung cemetery in Keelung is the first such event in Asia; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to prevent further ivory shipments from Hong Kong to Taiwan and seek to support the excellent Taiwanese initiative by publicly burning all confiscated ivory currently held in the United Kingdom.
